SOMNADI KAYAM (സോമനാദി കായം )




Botanic name:  Gardenia gummifera    

Family:                        Rubiaceae

Other names:

Malayalam:  Gandharajan, Kambimaram.

Sanskrit:      Gandharaj, Hingunadika, Nadihingu.

Tamil:          Sirukkambil, Deekkamalli, Puranapalam.

Hindi:          Dikamali.

It is a shrub or small tree of dry deciduous woodland. Grows up to 3 meters.

Leaves:  Simple,Opposite, 5-50 cm long and 3-25 cm broad, dark green and glossy 
with a leathery texture.

Flowers: Solitary  and  white in colour .


          Branchlets of this plant exude a yellow resin. This resin is secreted in the form of tears, it is transparent, greenish yellow in colour with sharp pungent taste and offensive odour. 

This resin is Acrid, Bitter,Thermogenic,Antispasmodic,Expectorant,Appetiser, Carminative and Digestive.
                                                                                                                                                                                          This  exudate is used in traditional medicine, in the form of paste and powder. It is used to treat lack of taste, wound, indigestion, constipation, abdominal distentions, colic pain, roundworm, cough, respiratory diseases, fever, and skin diseases.
